In India the right to privacy has been declared as a fundamental right by the Supreme Court In a nine Judge bench in Justice KS Puttaswamy and Anr vs Union of India UOI and Ors SCC the Supreme Court held that every citizen has a fundamental right to privacy and that this right cannot be violated by the government unless it does so under a law and does so in a manner that is proportional It is in relation to this and in order to give effect to the fundamental right to privacy that the Government enacted the Digital Personal Data Protection Act The Bill was passed as an Act by the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha on th and th Aug respectively and received the assent of the President of India on Aug An overview of the provisions of the Act has been discussed in this elearning course
